A silver camping lantern hummed and cast lively arcs over the low treehouse roof. Greta knelt beside a small wooden bench, patching a travel-size quilt from fabric squares. Each square rubbed against the rough plank floor, and loose threads caught on splinters. She dipped a flat spatula into a tin of fabric glue. Then she spread a thin layer along the edge of a lilac square. The spatula rasped, and the glue dragged. Tiny grains of sawdust clung to the wet film. Tree sap smelled faintly sweet, and lantern reflections danced across the glue.

Outside the railing, a young gray squirrel balanced on a willow branch. The branch leaned toward the platform. Its claws scraped bark, sending dry flakes across the planks. Routine sounds mixed with the soft creak of the rope ladder. The rungs shifted under the mild wind.

Midway through the patchwork, daylight dimmed. An overcast layer rolled in, loading the air with moisture. Dampness spread across the boards; glue lines thickened and began to skid instead of flow. Greta shifted her knee to a smoother plank and angled the spatula flatter, lowering friction. A gust rocked the willow branch. The squirrel leapt inside, landing on the unfinished quilt.
