A soft hiss rolled out of the washer drum, then a deeper thrum shivered across the tiles. Damp warmth wrapped the laundry room; steam gathered under the hanging sheets. Tiny beads clung to the chrome faucet, and a faint soap smell hovered below. Near the folding table, a mound of white soap powder rose like a tiny dune. It sat crusted where earlier splashes had dried. A linen pouch packed with basil dangled from an overhead line, swinging each time the spinning dryer vibrated. Below, a small tabby kitten crouched, ears twisting toward every new knock inside the metal machines. The pouch swayed just beyond her reach. Heat shimmer lifted between her whiskers and the glowing dryer door.

The kitten sprang toward the drum, but two forces pressed her back at once. Wet steam burst from the open washer lid, fogging her fur. The dryer door breathed steady heat that tingled along her pads. The air became a moist dispute of rising warmth and sliding droplets, making the tile slick. She paused, nose twitching, and spotted a cypress wood scoop lying beside the powder dune. The handle still felt cool. She gripped it in her teeth and dragged a nearby damp towel over the scoop. The padded bundle leaned against the glowing door. The layered cloth dulled the heat, though the towel soon dried stiff where it touched the metal.

With the glare muted, the kitten hopped onto the rim of the drum and batted the basil pouch. One final knock shook it free; dried leaves fluttered onto the slick floor. As she leaped down, the towel edge cracked, sending a thin line of fibers across the cypress scoop. Heat kept baking the cloth, and a slow sprinkle of toasted lint drifted onto the soap dune below. Droplets from the condensing steam met the loose powder and began to bubble faintly. Foam spreads across the tiles. The pale ribbon of suds creeps toward the open doorway.

刺眼的光線被擋住後，小貓跳上滾筒邊緣，拍向羅勒布袋。最後一聲輕敲將布袋震落，乾葉飄到濕滑地面。牠跳下時，毛巾邊緣斷裂，一線纖維劃過柏木舀勺。熱度持續烘烤布料，些許焦絨慢慢飄落到下面的肥皂沙丘。冷凝蒸滴打在鬆散粉末上，開始輕微冒泡。泡沫在磁磚上蔓延，淡白色水帶正向敞開的門口爬去。
