A sharp smell of nutmeg drifted from a cracked spice jar beside the cellar stairs. Cool air hugged the stone room while a thin blade of afternoon sunlight slid through the half-open trapdoor.

Quinn knelt and raised a small mirror toward the bright line. The first attempt sent a narrow spot across the floor; the spot bounced onto a green bottle, then sprang upward as a pale beam. The beam entered the water inside the bottle, bent, and painted a broken rainbow against a stack of clay pots. Dust stirred, rising in a soft plume that floated through each band of color. Wonder lived in that moving circle of light, yet the beam still stopped before it reached the far wall. Quinn shuffled crates aside, found a second mirror, and leaned it against a tin pan. The new angle pushed the rainbow farther, but the glare also threw a hard shadow over several sacks of grain—each sack heavy enough to hold seed from a whole hectare of summer field above this room. Colored bands now crossed the old shadow, mixing red with grey streaks along the bricks. Quinn nudged the first mirror again; the rainbow wavered, split, and briefly showed twin arcs that slid over the dusty floor and climbed the stone steps.

A jar rolled during the shift and tapped the bottle, sending ripples through the water and breaking the twin arcs into scattered fragments. Quinn lowered the mirror to stop any smash of glass. Scratches marked the floor beside the moved crates. The bright spot stayed short, and dust kept circling in its faint glow.
