English 原文
Hope swung a small mallet against a brass disk hanging from a wooden beam on the quiet side of the dock. Finn leaned over a crate, listening for clear resonance while gulls let out a crooked chirp above the masts. Bright noon light flashed across wet ropes and painted silver ripples on the harbor water. Warm lunchtime air carried savory steam from a galley pot somewhere down the pier, mixing with a zesty hint of lemon from Finn’s open lunchbox on the bench. The pair tried to respect a thin chalk circle marking the safe work area, so they stood shoulder to shoulder within it, taking turns striking the disk and noting its pitch.
Halfway through the tuning, the ferry engines growled and sent a long vibration through the planks, turning each tap into a muddy hum. Hope covered his ears for a breath and steadied the disk again. Finn spotted a folded square of foam packaging wedged between coiled rope. He pulled it free, squeezed it flat, and leaned it against the beam to muffle the rumble. The shield worked for a short while; the disk’s ring floated cleanly again. Spray from a passing wake soon drenched the foam, and the waterlogged sheet sagged. Each strike now produced a dull rattle as the wet shield bent inward. Droplets fell, smearing the chalk line around their feet. The pair kept tapping, edging closer until the tone finally matched the chart. A tiny green crab crossed the smeared circle, touched the torn foam once, and vanished between two damp planks.
