Crisp nudged a small apple across the damp leaves.

Morning light fell through thin branches.

The apple rolled toward a low concrete bunker near bushes.

Crisp aimed to reach soft berries growing behind that wall.

A quick squirrel launched a pinecone down from a branch.

The pinecone struck and changed the apple.

Apple bounced into a tangle of thick root system underground.

Roots gripped; Crisp could not budge.

He stretched his body and slipped under the scratchy roots.

His paws scraped soil, loosening small stones around the vessel.

The vessel tilted, sending rainwater into the packed soil below.

Wet earth slicked; the apple slid free.

It rolled beyond the bunker and toward the berry patch.

A tall fern dropped, blocking the apple.

The apple stopped, but red berries now hung within nose reach.

Below, water from the tilted vessel kept seeping through loosened soil.
