A silver-grey sliver jutted from the damp sand beside the slide. “What is that piece doing there?” Rosa crouched, her knees pressing the rubber ground. She brushed the top layer away; only a narrow tip remained visible, reflective enough to mirror the pale sky. Behind her, a swing sliced an exhilarated arc, chains giving off a soft metallic rasp. Wind moved through the climbing structure, adding blue-toned flashes where worn paint met steel-grey bars, while scattered drops tapped the plastic roof above the sandbox.

Rosa pinched the strange shard, yet the rain-packed sand gripped it firmly. A twig became a lever, but the buried shape stayed still until a second, slower pry loosened one corner. The slide queue shortened; children wandered toward the bench vicinity, footsteps muffled by the rubber surface. Free of crowding, Rosa knelt again. The object lifted a fraction, revealing a short handle. Her eyes savored the spiral grooves traveling down its length, each groove catching the fluorescent cast of afternoon light. Those grooves had been cut by a negligent hand on a lathe; some rings dipped unevenly, and shavings still clung in tight recesses.

A final twist broke the last grains, and a small wooden fork emerged, its tines rounded by time, its shaft silver where wet sand had polished the varnish thin. What had seemed a shard now looked like an old picnic tool, forgotten through many seasons. Rosa carried it to the water fountain, let cool water flow over the wood, and checked the surface for splinters.
