Emil shoved the heavy workbench closer to the open door, knees bent and shoulders tight against the weight. He had already sanded a narrow wooden tray, planned to serve up fruit on it for the neighborhood picnic, and now needed to fit two thin side rails. The first rail slid halfway, then wedged; wood fibers rasped against each other and stopped his arms cold. He rolled up his sleeves, braced a foot on the bench, and pressed again, but the piece refused to move.

Warm glue had dripped earlier, so the floor clung to his soles. Between tries he dragged a mop in short strokes, feeling the stick-and-release under each step. When he knelt for a lower angle, sweat trickled along his spine, yet the rail still balked. Suki walked in, ready to pitch in, and gripped the opposite edge; their combined push bowed the strip enough to loosen the grip, yet a faint crack ran along the grain. Emil paused, reaching beneath the bench for a cloth to wipe stray dust. His fingers struck glass instead. He pulled out a small jar; inside, a dried sea urchin balanced like a tiny spine-covered star. The unexpected find slowed both of them. Its brittle shell reminded him that pressure could break more than wood.

He shifted tactics, easing the damaged rail free, then turned it over and traced the split with light fingertips. Rather than force it, he shortened each end with careful strokes of a hand plane, lowering his stance so his elbows almost brushed the board. The rail finally slid home without protest, leaving only a thin seam. Emil set the jar on a high shelf, rubbed his stiff wrists, and began planning a second tray. Outside the doorway, a gray pigeon flapped onto the yard roof, tilted its head toward the clatter inside, and sprang skyward in a blur of wings.
