Steady voices of bargaining buyers flowed around their feet.

Nora steadied the pole while Grey looped fresh juniper twine around the eyelet sewn into the canvas. The coil had been unraveling since dawn, fine strands loosening like fringe, yet Grey trusted one more pull. He threw the line upward; it brushed the beam, slipped, and sprinkled tawny dust onto a crate of oranges. Next he anchored the twine with a small clay luminary turned sideways, its handle acting as a hook. The vessel rotated and knocked a stack of copper teaspoons from a nearby stall. Shoppers glanced, oranges rolled, and the canopy still drooped, bronze light rippling across its painted fish.

A child darted in and offered a broken wooden wedge that once propped a weighing scale. Grey accepted, jammed it into the beam’s notch, and Nora levered the pole beneath it. If the wedge cracked, the canopy would tumble over baskets of mint, so both pressed carefully. Wood creaked, cloth rose, and suddenly a hidden pocket along the hem split. Dried juniper needles, saved there for scent, scattered like confetti, and a tiny paper marlin fluttered down onto a heap of dates. The canopy now cleared every head, though one corner leaned lower than the rest. A cinnamon stripe of dust stayed on the dates beside the folded paper fish.
