Pale light drifted across a silver compass as the ceiling projector rotated above the exhibition hall. The instrument sat on a frost-white cushion, its octagonal rim catching blue reflections from the surrounding glass panels. Tara stopped, letting the faster tour group file past. A faint shape, almost leaf-green, clung to the compass needle and broke the tidy display line. She leaned closer, thinking it might be a scrap of ticket paper, yet a slim jointed leg shifted. The unexpected movement pinned her attention; the air conditioning hum filled the pause between her breaths. Behind her, an archway led toward a skylit pavilion, but she remained in front of the case, studying the tiny hitchhiker.

The museum’s trail wing simulated how visitors could take a hike along mountain ridges, so the compass had been mounted on a platform that turned when a side wheel was spun. Tara gripped the steel-grey wheel, but its axle resisted, slick with countless fingertips. On the second attempt the platform inched, tilting the cushion and bringing the green creature into clearer view. It was a mantis, delicately balanced, its forelegs folded as if in prayer. She tried to understand how the insect had arrived inside such a sealed display. A ventilation slit sat high at the rear, almost invisible in shadow; the slit looked just wide enough for a patient crawler.

A decision rose inside her body; she kept turning the wheel until the back of the compass faced the slit. The mantis rotated with the platform, sunlight from the nearby octagonal pavilion falling over its shell like cold water. After two more slow turns, the slit aligned, and a draught rushed through. The mantis lifted, stepped off the compass, and vanished into the narrow gap without touching glass. Tara steadied the wheel, then retraced her path toward the next corridor. The compass that had been tilted now lay level as she nudged its cushion with one careful fingertip.
