Fine sawdust clung to Nina’s palms while she braced a narrow wooden trellis against her knee. The frame bowed outward each time she leaned in, and the rough lattice pressed lines across her forearms. When she tried to hoist it upright on the drying rack, the lower edge dragged across the floorboards and stuck. A faint floral scent drifted from a small tin of jasmine oil nearby, reminding her that the final coat could not begin until the trellis stayed steady.

She shifted her weight, toes gripping inside loose sandals, and pushed again. The frame rocked, then sagged sideways. A coil of wood shavings slid free like timid tendrils escaping a nest. If the rack stood wider, the cross-bars would catch at once, but her shoulders met stubborn resistance. Cole stepped through the open doorway, his elbows dusted white from sanding a stool. Without a word, he planted one boot behind the rack and pressed his back against the trellis. The beam shuddered between them; their combined force lifted it several centimeters before the right post jammed against an uneven plank. Sweat traced down each spine, yet the lattice remained crooked.

Cole dropped to a crouch, fingers probing the warped plank. The board had been nailed hurriedly and sat proud of its neighbors. He pried it up with the thin edge of a chisel, and the obstruction gave. Together they eased the trellis onto the rack; gravity did the last work as their arms relaxed. The unexpected twist arrived immediately: a tiny, dust-colored mouse darted from behind the freed plank and vanished under a tool chest, leaving both pairs of calves tingling from the sudden movement.
