Warm, humid breath followed, spiced with resin from tomato vines and the faint sweetness of bruised basil. She had come early, certain that today would be tidy: move the trays of budding cucumbers into deeper pots, note their progress, and close before dusk. The plan sounded simple, almost relaxing, and the space promised pure hands-on experience—no charts, no supervisors, only soil against her palms. Nowhere along the ridge of roof vents could she feel the breeze she expected. Signs of stagnation clung to the air; condensation formed lazy beads that refused to slip. Gloves still damp, she jammed a wooden pole between two warped slats and levered upward. Tiny roots pierced the mash, a pale tangled mat creeping toward the cucumber starts. If the labels were any clearer, the mix-up would vanish, yet the invading sprouts blurred every tidy line in her mind. She lifted the trowel, began to scoop, then halted; the grains crumbled like damp sand, refusing to come away clean.

Suki rolled her sleeves higher, accepting that order had slipped beneath layers of unexpected growth. She scraped a channel between the seedlings and the rogue carpet, planting a bamboo stake as a border. Only when the last clump lay piled beside the path did she glance at the clock: the sun already leaned low, amber washing the panes. She moved faster, tying the cucumbers loosely, adding fresh soil, trying to wrap up the task before the remaining light flattened. Scarcely was the pole returned to its hook when the earlier breeze fell quiet once more. In the hush, a single quinoa sprout still clung to her boot, its thread-thin stem glowing against the dark rubber.

她轉身走向工作桌，卻被一股堅果般烘烤的味道止住腳步。在堆肥桶旁，一只淺盤倒扣著，表面覆滿珍珠色顆粒。午餐剩下的藜麥被倒在土上，又被玻璃房暖意維持著；細小的根刺穿黏糊糊的穀粒，蒼白的網狀層正往小黃瓜苗爬去。要是標籤清楚些，這場混亂或許早消失，但侵入的嫩芽把她腦中的整潔線條全抹糊了。她舉起鏟子準備鏟除，卻在半途停下；穀粒像濕沙一樣碎裂，怎麼也鏟不乾淨。

蘇琪把袖子再捲高，默默接受秩序已被突如其來的生長推翻。她在苗和雜芽間挖出一道溝，插下一根竹籤作為邊界。最後一團泥被推到小徑旁時，她抬眼瞄了時鐘一眼：夕陽已低，琥珀色光澤洗過玻璃。她加快動作，鬆綁小黃瓜、填入新土，試著在餘光消散前結束工作。吊杆剛放回掛鉤，先前那道風就又歸於無聲。寂靜中，一株孤單的藜麥嫩芽仍緊貼在她的靴尖，細如絲線的莖在暗色橡膠上微微發亮。
