Boots sliding across damp oak, Wade halted beneath an unfinished hull and brushed his glove over a wet footprint shaped like a crescent moon. Rarely had the narrow alley between ribs smelled so fiercely of tar and salt; each breath carried brine, char, and a faint promise of oil. At this juncture of plank and keel, sawdust drifted downward, sticking to the black smear. A gull cawed overhead, yet the echo felt trapped among the beams, as though the vessel already cupped its own small sea. Wade straightened, convinced a careless worker had stepped through a spill moments earlier, and the notion steadied his hand long enough to mark the spot with a loose shaving.

Banter rose from the distant quay: brief laughter, a tool tapped for emphasis, then wind swallowed the sounds. The scents thickened into a plethora; resin edged toward sweet rot where rainwater pooled, while iron shavings lent a metallic sting. Wood curls clung to Wade’s sleeves like a mute entourage following his every movement. Another print appeared farther in, lighter, almost dry. Between them, a plank bowed inward, too tight for boots yet wide enough for something softer. Wade knelt, slid his lamp forward, and the glow rippled across the grain, but the tight angle blocked a clear view. He waited, counting the slow drip from a tar ladle, the earlier assurance fraying with each drop.

Only when he tilted the lantern against the keel did the smear transform; the tar’s gloss broke into overlapping ovals, more scale than leather sole. Lamp held low, his fingers traced the edge where the shapes tapered to nothing. If the planks were any closer, he could not have squeezed his shoulders through the gap. What stopped him was the sudden absence of tar’s sharp bite, replaced by brackish breath as though tidal mud had seeped inland. He paused, lowering his head between the beams, then drew back, palm streaked black yet speckled with silver grit that caught the light. A decision hovered: crawl deeper or retreat toward daylight.

The breeze shifted, carrying fresh shavings past his cheeks; they circled once, loosened from their quiet entourage, and drifted toward the darker recess. Seldom did the yard grow this still at midday, but now even the distant banter thinned, replaced by the muted knock of rope against mast. Wade exhaled, the earlier assumption dissolved, and shuffled sideways until his shoulders fit the gap. A cold hush rose from below the hull, mingling resin with brine until the mixture suggested open water rather than dry dock. He stopped at the threshold, lamp quivering over the final, half-formed print. Wade pressed his palm against the scale-textured mark.

他把燈斜靠龍骨時，污痕才改變形貌；瀝青光澤裂為重疊橢圓，更像鱗片而非鞋底。燈掛得低，他用指尖描過邊緣，那些形狀漸漸消失。若板材再靠近些，他根本擠不過肩。阻住他的不是空間，而是瀝青辛辣氣突然消失，取而代之的是漬泥般的鹹腥。他低頭探入梁間，又退回，掌心抹黑，卻閃著捕光的銀色細砂。去爬得更深，或是回頭向光——猶豫懸在空氣裡。

風向一變，新鮮木屑掠過臉頰；它們盤旋一次，脫離安靜的伴行隊伍，飄向更暗處。中午的船廠少有這般寂靜，連遠方的嬉鬧聲也淡去，只剩繩索敲桅的悶響。韋德吐氣，先前的假設崩解，側身擠進縫隙。船殼下湧起冷冽氣息，樹脂與鹵水混成味道，像乾塢漂來一片開闊水域。他停在臨界處，燈光顫著照向最後那枚未成形的印記。韋德把掌心壓上鱗理般的痕跡。
