A faint crackled glaze coated the surface, evidence of countless hands and years. Rarely had the workshop smelled so intensely of pine; the sweltering air clung to Mabel’s skin while the polishing wheel hummed for its daily work. Near her boots, a windfall of raw, dust-dulled chunks filled a wooden crate, each piece carrying its own cloudy secret.

Her fingers brushed away loose grit, and she set the unusual lump on the spinning leather. The task demanded a delicate balance between pressure and speed, or the resin scorched instead of clearing.
