English 原文
Kane splashed forward, the shallow water slurping around his boots as he bent toward a narrow hoof-shaped dent glistening on the exposed flat. Only when his fingertips brushed the rim did a muffled bubble pop, ticking like a muted bell under the vast sky. The same rhythm repeated farther on, a low sequence echoing along the slippery mud. Wind tugged at his jacket, carrying the distant clang of a channel marker, while gulls wheeled overhead. The print looked fresh, its edges unblurred by tide-wash, and Kane straightened, certain a living creature had crossed moments earlier.
He paced along the line of dents, yet each succeeding mark narrowed until the final one vanished beneath a dilapidated plank left from an old oyster rack. The plank groaned under his weight, so he rested a palm upon it and listened; the murmur beneath suggested hollow space, not solid earth. Were the sand a little drier, the plank would hold steady, though slick mud pressed upward in slow pulses, almost breathing. A distant thunderstorm rolled across the horizon, its bass rumble threading beneath the smaller sounds, an unsettling interlude between wind gusts. Kane slid his foot back, and the small splash confirmed nothing beneath the plank felt reliable anymore.
He lifted the plank, expecting a deep hole, and found instead a cramped bivouac fashioned from driftwood and kelp, its roof woven tight, the interior swept clean. Inside lay broken shells arranged in careful rows, each one pierced at the hinge, each one humming faintly where trapped air escaped. Hardly had the pattern registered when the ebbing water surged, tilting the shelter sideways and smearing the ordered rows. Kane hesitated, then crouched, palms wide, steadying the fragile structure instead of allowing the tide to claim it. The tide pressed against his legs, yet he remained, choosing to keep the small refuge intact for whatever builder might return.
The water withdrew again, leaving wide ripples quivering against the driftwood wall and whispering thin sighs along the exposed mud. A hush followed, broken only by distant gull cries and the faint drip from the shelter's eaves. Shells rocked in slow discord, colliding once, twice, until their dry knocking finally settled into quiet harmony across the tiny chamber. Mud streaked the lifted plank, now propped beside the shelter; its wet surface reflected passing clouds like tarnished glass. Beside the board, a narrow channel trickled seaward, carrying sand grains that twirled and clinked against tiny pebbles. A final tremor shivered through the bivouac, sending one pierced shell spinning until it rested on its rim, pointing toward the open sea.
