English 原文
Every afternoon, Gwen slid into the ocean-blue bumper car closest to the gate; today a sparrow darted across the varnished metal floor before she even reached the wheel. Its wings brushed the surface in short bursts, scattering tiny flakes that glimmered like broken shale beneath the chasing LEDs. Rarely had the arena looked so wide; the empty red car beside hers seemed to leave a hollow space the music could not fill. Sparks crackled overhead in intermittent ribbons, yet the bird’s quick hops made the silence between those flashes feel louder than the bass thump rolling through the frame.
She pressed the pedal just enough for a crawl, the rubber bumper grazing the barrier with a muted cough, and the resulting tremor traveled up her spine. Each gentle jolt reminded her of former collisions that once came paired, two cars spinning out together; now only her own shell turned, slow and cautious. The sparrow skittered near the barrier, then lifted, landing on the drooping pole of the vacant red car, its tiny claws gripping the chrome as though the ceiling were a restless sky. The lights painted its feathers taxi yellow for a heartbeat, ocean blue the next, and still it stayed, cocking its head toward the space beside her knees where a second hand used to tap the dash in shared rhythm.
Mid-lap she eased off the pedal. The other drivers looped past, gregarious clusters bumping and cackling, but she allowed them to flow around her. Only when the sparrow lifted again did she steer into its path, stopping short so the bumper met the floor’s slick sheen at an angle. Wheels still, she watched the bird glide to the steering wheel of her old partner’s car and peck at the soft rubber rim, then hop inside the cockpit itself. From that perch it chirped once, not frantic but exploratory, poking at glitter left by countless spark showers—no longer a trapped outsider, more a tiny custodian of the grid’s forgotten corners.
Pedal untouched, Gwen shifted her weight, one boot braced against the floorplate, torso leaning toward the silent red shell. Were the lights a shade dimmer, she might have lost sight of the bird entirely, yet dusk seeping through the high windows limned its outline in blue fire. She balanced on the pause, unsure whether to coax the sparrow out or follow its lead, and her fingers rested on the cool spin of the steering wheel, the sparrow balanced on her car’s chrome pole.
