English 原文
From the shade of the pavilion’s colonnade, Gwen watched a brown horse glide past, its glass eyes catching the amber bulbs overhead. As it rose, a thin metal arm near the canopy clicked forward and a brass ring popped into view, the motion as tidy as a magician’s flourish. She traced the sequence twice more, certain the arm responded to the horse’s highest point. Children leaned, grabbed, whooped, yet none of them noticed the hidden navigator beneath their saddles steering the show. Seldom had a fairground contraption revealed its secret so openly, and the clarity pleased her as clean geometry pleases a draftsman.
When the operator waved riders to the empty outer row, Gwen stepped aboard, palm sliding along the warm brass pole until her boots found the stirrups. The carousel began its rotation, the verdant fringe of the park wheeling past beyond the mirrors. On the first rise the horse beneath her paused—half a heartbeat of hesitation—and the arm above failed to advance. A faint knuckle of resistance travelled through the pole into her grip, as though a grain of sand had jammed the cam under the floorboards. The floor sighed underfoot, as though the whole platform were breathing. She watched the next horse crest smoothly, then hers juddered again, shorter this time, as if the rhythm were wearing thin. The certainty from the colonnade cracked; perhaps she had misread the mechanism after all.
The brass pole warm against her palm, she loosened her knees and let the saddle lift her higher than before. At the apex the arm stirred, groaned, then spat the ring; gleaming, it skittered past her fingertips and clinked against the platform rail. A boy in the bungalow-shaped chariot behind her gasped and scooped up the runaway prize, murmuring, “Here.” What stopped her was the mild smear of oil now darkening her glove—proof that her extra lift had freed something sticky inside the joint.
The ride slowed, music thinning to a distant squeeze-box wheeze, yet her horse kept twitching in tiny aftershocks, each pulse echoing the uneven run she had felt. She considered alerting the grey-haired mechanic near the ticket bungalow, screwdriver idle in his apron pocket; instead, she wiped the black stain across the saddle’s underside where no eyes would wander. The ring she had missed still rested in the boy’s cupped hands, its shine already dulled by fingerprints. Gwen stepped down, reached toward the rail, and pressed her oil-darkened glove against the cool brass post.
