English 原文
The sharp tang of wet iron rose from the brine, edged with a faint sweetness that hinted at dried seaweed. Ben stood ankle-deep on the salt pan’s tough film, wooden rake resting against his hip. Seldom had the basins smelled so concentrated; each breath carried resin, charred driftwood, and raw mineral. He dragged the rake, expecting a neat ridge, yet the fragile crust shattered, leaving cloudy swirls that folded back into the water. His earlier inquiry into crystal thickness offered no answer, and it was the sudden slack in the breeze that stalled his motion. As though the surface were parchment, the rake now scuffed rather than sliced.
Crust breaking again, Ben paused. The morning forecast had promised still air, yet a light gust skated across the pools, scattering fine flakes beyond reach. With the work stalled, he leaned the rake against a low wall and walked toward the gear shed, shoulders cautious under the wide brim. The smell changed there—oil, must, a thread of smoke from an unseen fire farther inland. Buckets waited for repair, and he began buffing rust from one rim with a piece of coarse cloth. Observation settled into rhythm: turn the bucket, wipe, turn again. Wind rattled loose boards overhead, a random percussion that echoed inside his ribs. For a moment he simply listened, cloth idle in his hands.
Rust dusted the cloth copper-brown, and the pattern of specks along the weave resembled the lattice he had hoped to lift from the water. An unplanned mediation took place in his fingertips: cloth against metal, thought against memory. He returned to the pan carrying nothing but this tactile echo. In his absence, the sun had thickened the brine along each shallow rim; narrow bands now lifted like frosted glass. Kneeling, he slid one palm flat, coaxing a sheet onto his wrist before gravity bent it. Hardly any rake was needed. Had the wind been stronger, the edge would have blurred again, yet quiet held.
A single, unexpected drop—cool, fresh—landed on the back of his hand. Somewhere beyond the glare, a stray cloud released sparse rain, barely more than a sprinkle, yet enough to dull the unharvested center. Ben adjusted, working faster along the margins, gathering what remained sound. The first flakes clung to his damp sleeve; the bucket beside him filled grain by grain while dissolved crystals drifted away unnoticed. When the drizzle moved on, only the iodine smell lingered, sharper now against the muted sky, and salt dust whitened the crease of his elbow.
