English 原文
A rectangle of lighter varnish marked the reference shelf where the thick world atlas normally waited. Bram’s fingers traced the empty space, then skimmed along the spines above and below, searching for an overlooked copy in the neat hierarchy of colored geography folders. The first-period bell rang, chopping the search short; desks scraped backward, and the aisle demanded a slow give and take of bodies heading toward the corridor.
During the next forty-minute slot the classroom glowed with amber mid-morning light. A stack of rolled posters from last week’s cultural exchange fair leaned beside the window, their edges catching that honey tone. Bram returned to the shelf, but another student, June, now read the missing atlas at a desk near the potted plant. Her elbows formed a careful triangle over the pages—an unspoken mutual respect for shared resources. Bram set up his sketch paper and waited. The atlas had been printed on thick, cream pages, and its maps showed river deltas he needed for an art project; nothing else would match the scale.
When the second bell sounded, June rose quickly, sliding the heavy volume beneath her arm. She stepped into the corridor rush, and a loose pamphlet fluttered from between the pages. Bram caught it before it touched the polished floor. June noticed his appreciative nod and passed the atlas to him without a word, papers still rustling inside. Back at the shelf Bram returned the book, but the fallen pamphlet revealed a pressed golden leaf—its veins mapped like tiny roads, a forgotten souvenir that had been left since autumn. He tucked the leaf into his own notebook as the third bell echoed down the stairwell, and a faint scent of chalk dust lingered in the air.
