English 原文
A muted hum slipped from the fluorescent tube above the reference shelf, meeting the hush of turning pages and the faint scrape of Vera’s shoes against the polished floor. Oscar’s notebook tapped a rhythmic beat on his thigh while he scanned the spines, hunting for an atlas; Vera reached for a thick dictionary to trace Latin roots. The shared shelf held only one stool, and its metal legs rattled each time either student nudged it. Pages rustled like low rain. The familiar chorus offered reassurance in the timed quiet before the next bell.
Both students moved closer, and the stool groaned under shifting weight. Oscar had located the atlas, but it perched on the highest ledge. He rose on toes; Vera bent her knees, sliding the dictionary outward. The cover rasped, releasing a dry cough of dust. They paused, finding common ground without words: Oscar steadied the shelf with one hand, Vera steadied the stool with the other. A sudden hiss from the ceiling vent stirred a forgotten booklet—its cutting-edge robotics diagrams fluttered free and slapped the floor. The unexpected drop echoed through the corridor doorway, stealing several heartbeats from the shrinking period.
Oscar kneeled, gathering a considerable amount of loose pages that had burst from the binding, while Vera’s fingers closed around the dictionary’s spine with visible tenderness. She balanced the booklet on the stool for Oscar; he lowered the atlas and flipped to longitude charts. Their elbows brushed once, then drifted apart like metronome arms. The bell rang, splitting the air with a sharp ring, yet both had copied the figures they needed. They slipped the books back almost in unison. The reference shelf that had been crammed a minute earlier now carried the booklet upright between two silent atlases.
