It was barely noon, yet the best spices were already vanishing, and Hugo aimed to reach the nutmeg jar before the last scoop left it empty. A spotted goat padded beside him, muzzle twitching at every new aroma. Traffic paused whenever two trolleys met, so Hugo waited near the produce corner where a jug of tamarind drink stood clear as mud, its sharp scent cleaning his palate. The weighing scale had been polished until its brass plate reflected striped light, and the shaded archway behind the stall formed an oasis of calm, its air cooler and lightly minty. The vendor had already loosened several lids, yet the nutmeg jar refused to budge; resinous dust had glued the metal tight. Pepper fumes pricked Hugo’s nose as he searched the counter. The first pry bent the thin wood, so he rotated the jar, pressed again, and the cap gave way with a grainy groan, releasing a rich, smoky puff. Warm bitterness rolled across his tongue even without tasting. Just then the goat nudged a sack of dried seaweed; a briny nautical odor billowed out and tangled with the fresh nutmeg cloud. Shoppers nearby leaned back, and unexpected space opened around the stall. Two smaller bags lay beneath the jar, already tied together with twine—a neat package deal that Hugo picked up at once. Payment finished, he let the goat sniff one bag in quiet thanks. A faint nutmeg haze lingered.
