English 原文
Someone had nudged the automatic door a moment earlier, and cool air slipped across Max’s arms as he slid his parcel onto the side table beside the digital scale. Above the blue-grey counters, fluorescent tubes threw a hard white glow that outlined a faint nimbus of dust around every cardboard edge. A small terrier, tethered to Zara’s wrist, stared through the glass while two pigeons squabble over crumbs outside. Max had filled the customs form twice already that morning; all he wanted now was a reading under five hundred grams before his queue number blinked away. He peeled a fresh strip of tape, pressed it flat, then lowered the parcel onto the scale. The display steadied at 508 g—the limit had been crossed by the weight of a single paperclip.
Max lifted the box, removed the thin brochure he had added for padding, and tried again with identical care. The screen settled at 503 g. A puff of turbulence from an overhead vent ruffled the parcel’s corner, tipping the reading upward once more. His shoulders tightened; he dreaded pulling a new ticket and joining the line already coiling past the poster rack. Beside him, the terrier nosed a roll of bubble wrap. The lightweight coil slipped from the glossy surface, nudged a stack of poster tubes, and the top tube began to roll.
The tube struck a coin tray on the nearby self-service machine; two coins hopped free, pinged across the laminate, and smacked the ticket dispenser’s metal arm. In an instant, a fluttering ribbon of pink tickets poured out, unwinding across the floor in widening loops. Zara stepped sideways, stopping the runaway tube with her knee; the terrier froze, ears stiff in bewilderment as the paper rained down. Max steadied the parcel once more, stripped away the address label’s backing, and the scale finally held at 499 g. At the same moment near the entrance queue, a clerk returning from the back office paused, noticing the drifting tickets. Thin slips skittered along the polished tiles toward the revolving door.
