Nina entered the shared laundry room, arms wrapped around a freshly washed plush blanket that dripped pale threads of water onto her shoes. The rooftop clothesline stood roughly sixty centimetres above her reach, and the blanket needed to clear that height to dry before evening. Earlier conversations about a shared goal of saving electricity flickered through her memory, yet the present gap remained stubborn and exact. She unfolded a low stool, climbed, and flipped one corner upward. The heavy fabric slid back across the steel-grey rail and landed on the floor with a wet sigh—still too low by the width of her palm.

She had already pulled a velvety mop handle from its frame downstairs and wrapped two turns of tape near its end. The extension added sixty centimetres. Her first push lifted one edge; only a third of the blanket crossed the rope before weight folded it down again. A broomstick had been left beside the detergent shelf; she slid it into the hollow handle and tightened the joint, gaining another fifty centimetres. Water pattered like soft rain when two-thirds of the blanket lay over the line, but the far corner still dangled. Spotting a chrome curtain rod near the recycling bin, she fitted it to the growing pole. One steady heave followed, and the full blanket flopped across the rope in a single wave, its fibres releasing a cool mist.

Wind slipping between rooftop antennae drew the fabric wide, turning it into a blue-grey sail. Nina’s shoulders dropped, and she leaned the taped pole behind a potted fern. A debate months earlier had made her speak out about individual rights; the memory brushed past while she listened to the distant elevator chime. If the breeze grew stronger, the blanket would tug even harder at the line, yet she was already stepping toward the stairwell.
