English 原文
The counter glass looked foggy, but every cinnamon twist behind it lined up in perfect diagonals. Honey-light from the kitchen pass-through spilled across the tiers. It turned the sugar crust bronze and outlined a repeated left-right, left-right lean that drew Nell’s gaze. A cooling tray deeper in the cabinet had been sprinkled with crushed pistachio, yet it copied the same tidy angle. Beside her, Wade shifted on the floor marking while a timer in the back issued a beep and a tray slid forward. Under the glass, a wooden riser—its paint chipped from years as a market stall—held a second row of braids. Ochre specks still marked its harvest-fair past. A plush gopher, posted like a mascot on the packaging station, bobbed each time a drawer shut. Yet the pastries never moved from their formation.
Steam still curled from the new sheet; however, the queue inched slowly and the freshest row vanished one tong-stroke at a time. Nell had arrived early, believing the rush would be light, yet only when three customers peeled away did the pair reach the counter. She guided the tongs through the gap and managed to pluck a single gourd-shaped bun onto their paper tray; the rest were taken before her hand came back. A low shelf nearby displayed yesterday’s croissants. Their price was already a bargain compared with the glowing pieces before her, but she kept her eyes on the warm rack. Wade glanced toward the entrance and read the chalk board that named the next flavour. He rejoined her just as a second batch emerged. This time, two more golden gourds joined the first—still short of the five indent circles pressed into the tray.
As they waited again, Nell noticed something new. Every pastry that leaned left sat on darker paper, while those tilted right rested on pale sheets. She tapped the glass, showing Wade the pattern, then chose to stay instead of exploring the discount shelf. When the attendant lifted the third tray, Nell watched for the left-leaning gourds and lifted each quickly. The dough flexed under the tongs, proof they were still soft. Two more thumped onto the tray, their combined weight finally filling every hollow space at once. Warm sugar flecks rolled across the paper. Wade reached for the ribbon box, and Nell was reaching for the final gourd bun with the paper tongs.
