English 原文

A stack of ochre pitchers, a loose coil of twine, and a silver-painted toy zeppelin dangled from a hook beside the pottery stall. Between the nearest pitchers crouched a caramel-speckled gecko, so stoic that its glassy eyes matched the glaze. June paused, the warm canvas above her throwing striped amber light across the shelves. Heat shimmer rose from the gravel lane, stretching thoughts into wavering ribbons that drifted over crates of figs and turmeric. A burgeoning crowd pressed behind her, and the vendor stepped away to fetch more wrapping paper, leaving the stall unattended. One copper-rimmed cup remained on the highest plank; June reached up, felt the edge, and gave a careful twist, yet the plank wobbled and the cup stayed just beyond her fingertips.

She slid a short step stool closer, but the gecko blocked the only steady spot for her foot. The cup still gleamed like fresh honey, and she now counted three other shoppers eyeing the shelf. If she had simply waited for the vendor, the little reptile would have stayed hidden among the warm pitchers. Instead, June tapped the plank; the vibration coaxed the creature forward, revealing that its tail clung to a thin clay chip wedged under the cup. The chip, not the animal, kept the mug from sliding. Realising this, June nudged the fragment with a fingernail; the clay flake fell, and the cup rolled gently into her palm while the gecko scuttled upward to a sunnier tile near the awning rope. The stall owner returned at last, counting coins as he walked, and June exchanged them for the cup. She lowered the cup to the stone bench in the open square, cool air circling the rim, and a faint crescent of dried clay now marked the spot where the chip had struck.
