English 原文
One gap broke the neat row of clay mugs on the pottery stall's front shelf, exposing a pale rectangle of dust. Jarvis angled his vantage point, lining the empty space with three similar blanks on the higher planks while the afternoon glare slid between striped shadows.
Every third slot lacked a mug, and the alternating light made the pattern almost pulse. Jarvis lifted one remaining mug for comparison, yet the dust mark refused to match its curved handle. A sharp snap from a closing jar behind him startled a market cat, which then paused beside his boots. The rhythm of absence held quiet merit, so he nudged the stacked bowls aside to explore further. Their combined weight hardly shifted, pressing the shelf cloth flat and stealing the grip from his fingers. The vendor had stepped away for wrapping paper, and a breeze rolled the awning lower, throwing deeper shade over the display. Jarvis crouched until a thin side-beam edged each silhouette, and only then did he notice that the missing mugs shared a wider shadow ring; their flared rims, perfect for pouring, stood out clearly in the dimmer light. Using the heavy stack as a brace against his hip, he levered one bowl outward and reached high until his fingertips closed around a hidden flared mug at the back.
When the vendor returned, Jarvis held up the piece; the man nodded to acknowledge the choice without words. From his raised stance he saw boxed duplicates waiting behind the counter, ready for the next rush. Deciding the discreet order deserved attention, he paid quickly before the afternoon stocks could vanish. The cat brushed his ankle once more, then sprang onto the sunlit bench at the square’s edge. At the same moment, across the lane, Stella poured fresh water into a shallow dish for another waiting cat.
