The seeds slid over the dry wood like tiny beads, piling against the far corner where a light breeze had pressed them before. Above, house sparrows shuffled along the lower branches, and a finch with a red cap waited higher, exactly the visitor Ian had hoped to sketch. A light drizzle earlier had left the air cool, but the bench now warmed under patchy sunlight, promising a calm watch.

Minutes slipped by, and the pile on the platform thinned faster than expected. Pigeons barged in, their heavy bodies rocking the tray so crumbs showered the ground scatter zone.
