English 原文
A fraying field guide, a dented metal thermos, and a rolled-down paper bag shared the warm bench. Ian brushed his palm along the boards; the raised grain rasped softly against his skin. Beside him, Theo pinched the paper bag’s rim and tipped a generous handful across the feeder platform three paces ahead. The seeds slid over the dry wood like tiny beads, piling against the far corner where a light breeze had pressed them before. Above, house sparrows shuffled along the lower branches, and a finch with a red cap waited higher, exactly the visitor Ian had hoped to sketch. A light drizzle earlier had left the air cool, but the bench now warmed under patchy sunlight, promising a calm watch.
Minutes slipped by, and the pile on the platform thinned faster than expected. Pigeons barged in, their heavy bodies rocking the tray so crumbs showered the ground scatter zone. When Theo stood to refill, a sudden gust lifted the bag’s bottom seam; a narrow split opened, spitting seeds in a fine stream. He clamped the seam between finger and palm, yet coarse kernels still escaped, tickling Ian’s wrist. A burst of laughter carried from a stroller on the path as the boys scrambled to cup their hands under the leak. Theo muttered a supposedly witty solution—“We can just pour faster”—but the motion scared every bird away, and the red-capped finch vanished into leaves. The older boy felt the wet patch where the earlier drizzle lingered and let the torn edge press harder into his thumb until the flow slowed.
Only a shallow pocket of mixture remained once the tear stopped. Ian rolled the bag tight, counting the grains that still clinked inside. They had planned to spread a fresh carpet across the whole tray; now they chose a gentler target. Ian walked the three paces, tapped a single line of seed along one corner, then stepped back. At the water dish he noticed the surface dull and low—just a drop shimmered at the center. He tipped the thermos, letting two quick dribbles join it, and slipped quietly onto the groove-scarred seat. Breeze calmed. One small sparrow fluttered down, pecked the thin line, and stayed. Behind it, the branch above quivered as a red cap edged forward.
