English 原文
“This one feels rougher,” Hana whispered. She rolled the thin incense between thumb and forefinger, testing the tiny ridges that scratched her skin like dry straw. Her goal was simple: find a lavender blend that would suit her aunt’s small reading room before the shop closed. The mid-aisle display, however, offered two nearly identical bundles, their violet labels long gone. A pediatrician near the wrapping counter compared citrus samples for his clinic, the single burning tray already wafting mingled smoke around his elbow. Hana lifted the first lavender sticks to her nose, yet cedar from the entrance shelf still clung inside her nostrils, blurring every hint of flower. She leaned back, drew a slow breath through parted lips, then tried again; the fragrance refused to reveal itself, and the blurred scent drift returned unchanged.
She decided to take charge of the tray the moment it cleared. The pediatrician placed his choice on the brass scale, and a small wheeled suitcase, his constant sidekick, nudged his calf as he shifted. Seeing her chance, Hana knelt on stiff knees and sprinkled a pinch of sand across the glowing tip, smothering the old ember without a spark. Yet the same confusion returned; the earlier smoke remained a burden, hanging in the warm air. Joel, her patient companion, stepped in from the entrance just then, cool evening air swirling around his jacket. Without words he lifted the empty tray, carried it three paces toward the doorway, and held it where the outside breeze pulled lingering smoke away. Hana struck the second lavender stick against the ceramic edge; the tip warmed, and a slim ribbon rose. She had already noticed that the draft bent the ribbon sideways, allowing her nose a clear path. A gentle floral thread finally surfaced, delicate yet firm enough to stand apart from cedar.
She paid for the lighter bundle while Joel returned the tray, and the pediatrician nodded appreciation at the cleared air. An unexpected power flicker made the ceiling fan pause, letting the new scent hover lower than before. A faint coil of lavender lingered, barely above the cedar undertone.
