English 原文
Three loose knots had already slipped when Reed pinched the waxy green thread against the bench armrest. Sun streak warmed one half of the metal, yet the shaded half pressed cool against his forearm. Six coloured strands fanned outward, their surfaces smooth like candle coating. Reed chased a neat chevron: forward knot, backward knot, tension evenly shared. A fawn-brown strand, softer than the rest, kept sagging and pulling the pattern to the right. He tightened it, and the tape crinkled but held. A pigeon brushed past his shoe, grains of grit crunching under its toes. A few steps away, Thea balanced a book on her knees, the scissors resting beside her on the blanket. Reed aimed to finish eight more rows before the playground bell rang; his first attempt added two tidy diagonals—still short of the bright wrist length he measured against his skin.
He tried again, lifting the fawn strand higher and drawing it across the others. Friction between the coated fibres rasped softly, yet the fresh knot refused full contact. A short gust lifted every loose end; the sudden tug tore one corner of the tape free. The fan lurched, nudging his wrist, and the movement rippled down the armrest. Inside the open supply bag on the ground, the jolt tipped a half-filled bead cup. Smooth glass pieces rattled out, struck the scissors’ rounded handle, and a single bead popped onto the paving stones. Each bounce grew smaller; by the third hop it barely cleared a pebble. If the tape had torn fully, the entire pattern would have unraveled. Ella's perceptive glance caught the cup tilt, and her hand pressed it upright, ending the spill, while Reed trapped the rolling bead beneath his thumb, the metal still quivering under him.
After the interruption, Reed retaped the strands, folding the strip back over itself for extra grip—a quiet compromise between speed and security. Row by row, colour returned to order; the chevron’s own tidy morality emerged where lines crossed and lay flat again. He tied the last knot and flexed the band; the pattern now reached the earlier mark on his wrist and stayed even. He eyed the bead he had caught, then slipped it into his pocket, preserving the bracelet’s simple ecosystem of threads alone.
At the same hour, beyond the swings, a gardener rinsed a shovel. The thin stream scattered ants, and one of them carried a speck of wax, tiny legs flashing as it hurried across the wet concrete.
