Joy laid five forward knots in a row; each one straightened a little of the dip but still left the band seven millimetres short of her wrist-test mark. A lone pigeon—an unhurried forager of crumbs—wandered beneath the bench, and Mabel, seated on a silver picnic blanket nearby, turned a page without looking up.

The sunstripe edged farther over the armrest. Heat seeped into the steel-grey surface, softened the clear tape, and the whole fan slid two millimetres sideways. Lars’s elbow jerked as he caught the slack; the chevron pattern kinked where the third thread had been trapped beneath the second. A thin bead of perspiration cooled on Joy’s temple, yet her fingers kept moving. She trusted steady intuition rather than measuring tools and began a tighter backward knot. If the sun kept rising, the tape would give way again, so Lars eased the spare-thread bag onto the warm metal, its cool interior shading the adhesive. The weight pressed the tape flat; the next eight knots lined up, and the band finally passed the mark in one sudden unbroken stripe.

Joy looped the bracelet around her wrist once, counting the chevrons twice to be sure. The length held; no twist returned. A sublime patch of pale sky reflected along the smooth armrest while distant swings squeaked across the grass. Joy waved to Mabel and started toward the playground path, the finished band coiled safely in her palm. Behind the bench, a forgotten translucent bead, warmed by the lingering sunstripe, slid a slow arc across the metal slat toward the shadowed ground.
