Unspooled Tickets, Frozen Queue-

English 原文
Rafael slid a clipboard across the form-filling table, the pen’s silver chain swaying under the bright fluorescent strips. He wanted the pharmacy to accept his insurance change today, so he added a clear photocopy to the original sheet. The narrow tray beside the reception desk looked roomy, yet a frosted plastic lip waited to test the stack’s thickness. Blue-grey lines on the paperwork formed a maze, and damp fingerprints already smudged several corners from earlier revisions. Confident, he pressed the doubled pages under the lip, but they jammed halfway and refused to travel another millimetre. A nurse pushed a cart past, and the brief breeze lifted the top corner, revealing how thick the bundle had become.
Rafael had stapled a second photocopy for safety, then tucked his queue ticket between layers as an extra guarantee. That final move interrupted the orderly stack on the counter, creating a stiff ridge that scraped against the plastic divider. When he shoved harder, the stapled edge sprang free, fluttering downward like a pale moth abandoned by evening air. The drifting sheet brushed a hanging ivy vine, dislodging a gnat that zipped upward in a silver blur. The sudden motion pulled the clinic cat from sleep; it sprang, paws sliding across linoleum, toward the flickering insect. Its sweeping tail snagged the ticket dispenser cord, releasing a tangle of numbered slips that skated over the damp floor.
Stella, stationed behind the pharmacy window, stepped out and scooped the cat against her chest, halting any further chase. Meanwhile Rafael crouched, gathering the fallen pages, and spotted the thick staple gleaming beside his shoe. Several tickets stuck against his knee, their blue ink already blurred where the damp floor had touched them. He pried that middle staple loose, slid the extra copy into his backpack, and patted the remaining sheets flat. Freed of the metal bulge, the slimmer bundle advanced beneath the frosted lip with a quiet, unhurried glide. Still crouching, Rafael was reaching for a fresh ticket that curled slowly beside the skittering plastic dispenser.
