English 原文
The lower half of the water-soaked paper shone, but the strip above already lay matte and quiet. Vivian hunched beside the tilted board, light from the open porch roof striking the wet zone in a narrow glare. A slim vase stood to the left, its bundle of garden flora casting thin shadows that wobbled whenever a mild breeze passed. The wooden framework holding the board groaned as she nudged it, and the metal clip sprang with a quick creak. She rinsed her brush, then swept a fresh stroke across the gleaming area; pigment bloomed outward like smoke. Dry air rushed in again, speeding the downward march of the drying line, so she switched focus to the right side first, a small timing shift that kept the wash even.
A doorbell rang somewhere inside the house—one sharp tone that cut the porch brightness. Vivian set the brush across the palette, wiped her damp fingers on her sleeve, and hurried through the doorway. She signed for a parcel and thanked the courier. During those short moments, the porch remained empty; water kept sinking into paper, and a stray gust lifted the corner of a tissue. When she stepped back outside, a darker bloom mark had spread near the lower edge, fed by a slow drip that had rolled from the brush handle while she was away. The upper section, now fully dry, no longer invited blending; its edges turned rigid under the stronger light.
She watched the new stain widen until it stopped shining. Instead of scrubbing it away, she loaded thicker colour and laid a bold tree trunk directly over the irregular shape, turning the accident into shadow beneath branches. Each stroke followed a careful rhythm—dip, glide, wait—almost a quiet ceremony against the ticking clock of evaporation. Where the drip had begun, a faint oval ring dried into the surface, darker at its rim, fixed forever just above the final branch.
