English 原文
The upstream sheet lay clear and still, but a silver dart flashed through the narrow gap between two boulders. Axel, kneeling on the cool clay bank, felt grit press into his palms as he peered at the moving glint. He thought a minnow had wandered too close to the faster water, its sides catching broken sunlight like metal foil. A loose blossom petal touched his boot, twirled once on the surface, then slid downstream with a faint hiss. Beside him, Fraser traced wildflower stems in a sketchbook, the paper braced against a root that felt damp and rubbery.
Axel lifted a flat shale slab from the outcrop; its edge felt smooth on one side, sandy on the other. Rotating the slab, he saw a chevron pattern on its face that matched speckled creek stones like kindred pieces. He slid the shale into the gap to watch water split around it, cool force pressing against fingertips. The first slab stayed, so he added two more; eddies tensed, and he had halved the gap. To seal the seams, he scooped clay already softened by splashes, sticky like dough, and pressed it into every crack. No one had voiced a plan, yet a pool gathered upstream while the current hammered the unfinished wall. When he wedged a fourth slab firmly, extra pressure pushed water sideways and the clay unraveled into pale ribbons.
A sudden swirl pulled one ribbon free, and muddy streaks escaped through a fresh hole, undoing the neat work. Axel leaned back, chest tightening, and searched for more clay, yet a flicker in the pool caught his eye first. The silver dart hovered beside the wall; sunlight slid away, revealing tiny legs and a finless tail—no minnow, but a newt. He decided in a breath: better leave a narrow path for the curious creature than chase a perfect barrier. Pulling grass-root fibers from the bank, he mixed them with firmer clay; the rough strands locked like thread through fabric. He patched only the lower half of the wall, letting a finger-wide gap remain where the current could slip away gently. If he had sealed every inch, the pool would have crept over the bank; instead, it lifted only to a calm mirror. Axel braced the braided clay on the lower stones, stepped onto dry ground, and the creek kept hissing through the slim opening.
