English 原文
Pebbles pinged against the downstream riffle, their brisk rhythm joining the soft hiss squeezed between two shoulder-high boulders. Jasper crouched on the dry bank in rubber-soled boots while Ivan, a few steps away, sketched wildflowers. For Jasper, nudging stones into that narrow throat felt like an enduring tradition; he had repeated the motion since sunrise, calves tightening each time. The first round rock of this turn looked smooth, almost scented by cold mineral water. He leaned forward, wrists braced on the boulder, and slid the stone into place. A sudden shove from the current tipped it out. It wobbled, spun, then rattled free, tapping his knuckles before tumbling into the shallow pool below.
He fetched a flatter shard pried from a shale outcrop. Sunlight skimmed its wet surface, flashing like quicksilver. Instead of pushing at once, Jasper waited, counting the pulse of the flow—every fifth heartbeat the surface dipped. On that dip he drove the shard inward, muscles corded along his forearms. Water struck back, scattering a miniature hailstorm of tiny pebbles down the half-built wall. One pebble skipped over his boot and landed on the clay lip, which released a green-bitter smell of crushed juniper where his heel broke the crust. The gap was being narrowed by each effort, yet a thin ribbon still forked around the left edge and glimmered downstream.
A driftwood stick, stripped smooth by past currents, floated from upstream at that moment and jammed itself across the leaking corner. Jasper had been ready to fetch more shale, yet the surprise brace changed his timing. He scooped sticky clay, pressed it along the stick, and held his palm against the trembling patch until the water backed up. Ivan glanced up, watching the surface above the dam rise less than a finger-width as afternoon shadows crept across the boulders. Jasper leaned back to the spot where he had first knelt; the round stone that had slipped away now lay half-hidden under a rippling film beside his boot.
