Cruz paused beside her, noticing the circles aligned like coins in neat columns that sloped slightly toward the sill. Outside, rain veiled the wooden pavilion across the street, its roof bending each drop into tiny flashing spears. Warm air from the radiator thickened the fog near the frame edge, so every fresh mark stood bright for a moment. A faint helix had been sketched on the upper pane earlier, but its pale coils were already dissolving into mist. Cruz lifted his finger and began to tend the pattern, adding a second row beneath the first. A runaway droplet formed at the top line, slid downward, and tore a pale streak straight through five circles. Bea laughed under her breath, but Cruz's shoulders stiffened at the long smear dividing their careful work.

Steam from Bea's untouched tea drifted upward as Cruz reached for the reference sketch, re-fogging the cleared strip. The new mist blurred the broken circles until only that pale vertical line remained sharp like a spine. Cruz wiped a narrow band beside the smear, and the line of moisture bent outward, curling into a loose helix. If they had insisted on restoring the perfect rows, the drip and steam would simply have ruined them again. Instead, Cruz traced more coils, letting each curve catch another falling bead and guide it along the twisting path. Bea mirrored the motion on the other side of the streak, and two shining spirals grew downward like mirrored vines. The circles became petals, the helix lines became stems, and the flaw turned into the centre of an unfolding plant.

Outside, the pavilion roof reflected their new design in faint silver, as though rain practiced quiet altruism by copying it. Cruz lifted his fingertip to sign the plant at the lower pane, guiding the curl of his initials. A sudden squeak put off the attempt; the finger jerked sideways and scratched a zigzag near the frame edge. The drip from the top edge continued, sliding along the new stems and shining like a slow silver insect. On the outer sill, a small sparrow landed, tilting its head toward the twisting pattern across the glass. The bird pecked a rolling bead of water and flitted off into the blue-grey rain.
