Reed’s watch stopped at thirty seconds while the top still rolled true, and he cracked a grin filled with cinnamon-sweet breath from the snack he had been chewing. Owen leaned forward, nose full of mingled pollen and plastic, already planning another configuration. A loosened weight clip glinted beside the shadowed rim, unnoticed, faintly rocking on its edge.
