English 原文
The felt lining pressed against Tamsin’s fingertips as she lifted a weight clip from the shared tray; its metal ridge felt warmer than the soft wool below. Sunlight draped a honey band across the parts bench, and the heat reached the nearest clip first. She had planned three clips for her disc, imagining a broad orbit, so she slid the first onto the top’s rim and heard a small nudge of metal meeting plastic. Across the room Ulric’s launcher rasped; his cord pulled free and the arena answered with a deep hum. The smooth pull invited a touch of mystique to the otherwise ordinary bowl, as if the scratches were more than ornament.
When Tamsin reached for a second clip, only two remained. Ulric had already pocketed one while fine-tuning his own disc. The tray now gave off more wool than metal scent, a sign of thinning supply. She turned the lone clip in her palm, judging its weight, then glanced at the arena where Ulric’s heavier top pressed the centre. The grooves running toward that centre encouraged every disc to join, yet her lighter configuration risked being pushed aside. A faint cordfray tickled her knuckles as she rewound the launcher; fibres tugged back, warning that another strong pull could snap them. Time inched forward with the sliding sun; warmth left the bench, and the clips cooled fast. Choosing caution, she kept only one extra gram on her disc and returned the final clip to the tray for whoever came next.
Her shoulders lowered as she released the launcher. The lighter top sprang out, skimmed over a scratch, and circled the bowl’s cooler half without touching Ulric’s spinning mass. No collision sounded; instead, two separate hums overlapped, one deep and steady, the other quick and higher, like twin notes on a low drum. Tamsin watched the space where the last clip lay untouched, its edge catching the faded sunstripe while both discs kept turning.
