Cool wire pressed against Luke's damp fingers as he lifted the star-shaped frame from the grass. His uncle chatted with a neighbour near the porch, keeping a loose eye on the backyard while Luke worked. The bucket of soap solution stood like a small oasis beside the low table. Its surface shone as if a thin nectar had been poured over water. Luke dipped the star slowly; the wire slipped under with a subdued gulp, and the liquid hugged each angle. When the frame rose again, a trembling film lingered across the shape, colours sliding in hushed bands. To give the film a longer life, he had already brushed the top edge with a spare loop. That single pass added a first, thicker layer of mixture. A gentle hum drifted from distant traffic, but the garden itself stayed nearly silent.

That first coat glimmered yet drained too fast, so Luke returned the frame for another dip. The second plunge left even more solution clinging to the metal. Tiny rivulets dripped with soft plops, darkening the grass below. He wanted an even sturdier sheet. He pressed a small sponge against the wire, squeezing extra liquid until the film sagged like a heavy curtain. That third layer had been pressed on so thickly that gravity soon won. A low creak passed through the frame, then the bulging surface ruptured with a sharp whisper. The burst sprayed cold droplets that spattered his shirt, jumped into the bucket, and rippled its mirror. Those ripples bumped a stack of waiting frames. One circular ring toppled, clinking against the table leg and wobbling onto the grass. The neat row he had tried to tidy up earlier lost its order. The dipping station no longer looked like a clean slate.

Luke steadied his grip and realised the extra sponge layer had been the trouble. He peeled that soaked pad away and shook off the excess fluid. The surplus drained back in a thin stream. The next dip formed a lighter film; he had removed just enough mass for surface tension to hold. He crossed the open lawn and wedged his elbow against the fence. That stop killed the tiny shakes travelling down his arm. The sheet stayed intact, rainbow bands drifting slowly while windless air muffled every outside noise. Beneath the table, scattered drops from the earlier explosion still glimmered. Each speck caught light like miniature beads of nectar. One last bead slid along a tilted blade of grass toward the pooled soap at the root.
