Soap drops already dotted Gwen’s rolled-up sleeves as she leaned over the bucket, raising a square wire frame that dripped shining threads. A honeybee slid between her arms, hovering above the rim, then burst upward toward a flower arrangement resting in a wide clay vase on the table’s corner. Sun pressed on Keane’s shoulders while he watched; the lawn swelled into a gentle knoll behind the dipping station, and a faint breeze travelled down its slope, stirring loose grass blades around his ankles.

Keane chose the coat-hanger hoop. He lowered it slowly until the metal ring vanished under the slippery surface, then drew it up at an even pace. A perfect film formed, colours marching downward while gravity thinned the top edge. The breeze nudged his elbows, and the membrane wobbled yet hung undaunted. He stepped toward the wind-shadow wall, careful to keep the hoop steady; with each footfall a tremor pulsed through his wrists. The honeybee returned, squeezed through an interstice between two fence boards, and settled on the glowing sheet. Keane froze. Breath held, he tilted the hoop a little, expecting an instant pop. Nothing burst; instead, dull silver gathered around the insect’s tiny feet, while vivid bands glimmered farther away.

The pause let him notice another detail: the bucket’s surface now sat lower, exposing a bright line of wet metal. He had lifted many frames, and the solution near the top had become soap-heavy. The heavier glycerine layer below must have reached the hoop just before he cleared the surface, thickening the lower half. That change, rather than the bee’s light touch, carried most of the tension. His shoulders loosened, and he eased the hoop sideways so the insect could fly off toward Gwen’s vase. Thin drops slid back into the grass. Aware that each dip cost more liquid, he walked to the table and laid the coat-hanger hoop beside the waiting wire frames.

他因此注意到另一件事：桶面降低了，露出一道閃亮金屬線。他已提起許多次框架，最上層的溶液變得以肥皂為主；而下層富含甘油，剛好在他把環拉出水面前黏在下半部，使那裏更厚實。支撐薄膜的力量來自這改變，而非蜜蜂的輕點。他的肩膀鬆開，將圓環側移，讓蜜蜂飛向葛雯的花瓶。細小水滴滑回草地。想到每次浸泡都消耗溶液，他走向桌子，把衣架圓環放在其他鐵絲框旁。
