English 原文
A half-folded pastry box waited on the packaging counter, and Hope, a veterinarian in a pale green coat, pressed its edges. Tess shifted her backpack higher, feeling the strap bite into her shoulder as she joined the two-person queue. Through the glass display, eight lemon twists shone with fresh glaze, each one sending a faint sugary scent toward the floor markings. The pastries had been arranged in two neat rows, their curved edges almost touching like tiles on a roof. A spaniel on a short leash leaned against Tess's calf, its paws sliding slightly on the tiled surface. From the kitchen pass-through, a burst of metal tray noise rolled forward, matching the spaniel’s quick wag.
The oven timer buzzed, and Hope’s hands paused; that brief interlude let a cloud of steam rise through the kitchen pass-through. Warm air flowed outward, fogging the glass until only vague shapes remained, yet the queue edged forward by a single tile. When the mist thinned, four lemon twists were gone, lifted earlier into Hope’s vessel of cardboard and ribbon. A rift along the seam widened under the weight, so Hope pointed it out and the clerk fetched another box. Tess balanced on one foot, swapping the backpack strap again, while the spaniel sniffed her shoelaces and the seconds kept dripping away. Service resumed minutes later, and only two lemon twists remained, their shine already dulling in the cooler draft.
Tess had planned to bring three pastries for the ferry ride across the lake that afternoon; the shrinking supply changed her plan. She bought a single lemon twist and shifted the paper bag against the warm side of her wrist. The spaniel answered with a slow tail sweep while fresh steam rose behind the pass-through window. As Tess turned toward the door, cool outside air brushed her cheeks and the bell over the frame jingled once.
