English 原文
"Are those the magnolia cupcakes?" Faye’s voice carried over the steady beep of the self-checkout scanners. She steered a wire basket toward the bakery counter, and buttery steam mixed with a sugar-rich scent around her. An elderly man stood nearby, his small terrier tugging its leash to sniff crumbs that dotted the floor. The dog paused, then nestled against the man’s polished shoe while its nose twitched at the yeasty air. Behind the glass, two neat rows of frosting-swirled cakes still waited, their pale tops glossy like fresh seashells.
Faye had hoped to take four cakes home for her sister’s tea, so she joined the slow line. Each rye loaf was being sliced twice on the humming machine for a woman wearing a clinic badge, likely a psychologist. Warm cinnamon rolled off the blades, wrapping every breath in sweet dust while the minutes slipped by. One customer swayed left, then right, and the queue copied the gentle sway as people craned to see the dwindling tray. When Faye reached the glass, only two magnolia cupcakes remained; the rest had already been boxed for others. She lifted a single paper boat, placed both cakes inside, and let her earlier plan shrink without complaint.
With her smaller prize secured, Faye crossed to the produce mist, where the crisp smell of wet lettuce cut through lingering sugar. Cold air drifted from the freezer doors and cooled the frosting, so she wrapped the bag closer to protect the softness. The terrier padded past again, tail ticking against metal, before lying beside the entrance mat while carts rattled toward parking spaces. Its head turned toward the bakery once, then sank as shoppers moved on and the cooled smells thinned. A sweet trace clung to Faye’s fingers as she pushed the door open and stepped into the outside heat.
