She steered a wire basket toward the bakery counter, and buttery steam mixed with a sugar-rich scent around her. Warm cinnamon rolled off the blades, wrapping every breath in sweet dust while the minutes slipped by. One customer swayed left, then right, and the queue copied the gentle sway as people craned to see the dwindling tray. When Faye reached the glass, only two magnolia cupcakes remained; the rest had already been boxed for others. She lifted a single paper boat, placed both cakes inside, and let her earlier plan shrink without complaint.
