English 原文
Frosted crumbs had clung to Eve's sleeve since the snack break. Now her arm drew the rope bucket toward the branch junction. The plank she wanted lay inside, cut to span the open gap between two thick limbs whose bark scratched like sandy stone. Her older brother Archie waited on the lawn below, passing tools up whenever she called down. A small rubber platypus toy, forgotten after yesterday’s play, rolled against the board and forced it diagonally. Wind pressed the bucket sideways, and the tilt made its rim scrape a knot, halting the climb. Eve planted one bare foot on the damp platform to steady herself and tugged harder. Her fingers slipped on the bucket’s tacky interior where pink icing and crunchy sugar garnish had left a sticky film.
She reached inside to lift the toy away, but the frosting held the platypus like glue, and strong gusts kept everything swaying. Every lurch knocked the bucket against ribbon lights meant to festoon the railing later, adding a shudder along the rope. Eve leaned close; bark ridges bit her forearm, yet the bucket still hung firmly fast. The plank’s underside now wore a glossy stripe of frosting, unusually thick and bright under the dappled light. She tried wiping it on her trousers, yet the smear only stretched in long shining threads. A sudden hush replaced the wind, leaving the platform briefly still, and Eve pressed the frosted plank across the gap. The sugary layer gripped the rough wood, firmly holding the board flush without her hands even nearby.
That same stickiness which had trapped everything in the bucket now pinned the plank firmly enough for quick hammer taps. Each nail slid through the softer outer grain, but one bent against a stubborn knot before sinking fully. The board stayed aligned because the frosting held fast while she tapped a fresh nail beside the knot. The lights stopped rattling, and the toy remained glued to the bucket wall, serving as counterweight until the final nail sank home. Eve stepped back toward the rope-ladder passage, palms streaked with palatable icing that still carried a faint vanilla scent. Above her head, the new plank rose and dipped a finger’s width with every gentle swell of the tree. Farther out, loose leaves on the tallest twig continued twirling through the bright afternoon sky.
