The scissors bit in short strokes, yet each slice left a pale flat spot, turning the circle into an uneven polygon. Oona tested the wheel again; it slid partway, jammed, and forced a tense shudder through her forearms. She changed approach, sanding the axle instead, but the repetitive grinding shook the table, nudging a loose plastic eye toward the edge. The eye dropped, struck the oak parts box, and its rebound sent a row of tiny springs rolling like bright caterpillars. One spring tapped the open clamp; the jaws quivered, and the glued arm of a fabric rabbit began to slide sideways.

Heat rushed into her shoulders as she lunged, catching the clamp before gravity could peel the damp glue joint apart. Lacking a third hand, she dragged a folded patch from a discarded quilt, wedging it beneath the rabbit for firmer support. The fabric carried an elaborate pattern of stitched suns, and the raised threads gripped the curved plastic better than bare rubber. Table vibrations eased, springs settled in their compartments, and the car wheel finally spun freely under a gentle fingertip test. On the drying shelf, glue continued to cure, its surface dulling while a faint scent mixed with the woody smell of oak. At the painting corner, Bea steered her brush through rinse water, sending colored ripples drifting toward the cup’s far rim. Nearby, those ripples kept widening in slow circles long after Oona’s wheel lay balanced on its new, silent axle.
