'Who used all the yellow?' Joel tapped the edge of the ice-cube tray, watching the glossy puddle ripple. Vesper shrugged; her eyes paused on the nearly empty well while an adult rinsed bowls at the sink. They had planned two shades: a bright orange for leaf prints and a deep green for the park scene below. Clean craft sticks lay like tiny oars across the newspaper, each streaked with either red or blue. Joel chose one, scraped the last ribbon of yellow into an empty cup, and added red. The mixture thickened, catching the kitchen light with a soft autumnal glow, then deepened to baked-clay richness. When he stopped, the orange had been mixed to the right thickness, glossy and ready for stamping.

As he lifted the tool toward the test strip, a single drop escaped and splashed on the newspaper. The wet mark bloomed outward like a tiny red starfish. When Vesper reached for the verdant green, she found the yellow well empty, drained by Joel’s earlier scoop. Fixing the orange had quietly stolen the colour base they needed. Blue alone offered only night-sky depth, and the murky rinse water left every stick tinged brown like moss. Joel scraped half the orange back into the vacant well, thinning it with that water-logged stick. He then stirred in blue, and two imperfect shades surfaced: a softer pumpkin orange and a green shadowed by moss.

They carefully carried both sticks across the wide sheet toward the drying rack. Each step had to be steady, or a drip would streak the painted boulevard sketched earlier along the paper’s edge. Under the warm bulb above the table, the adjusted hues looked acceptable. Beside the shaded rack, the orange lightened while the green shifted into an earthier tone. Neither shade matched the samples exactly, yet both would still fill their places on the collage. A quiet sweetness from the paint lingered in the air after the sticks landed on the newspaper.

他們小心將兩根木棒移向晾乾架，每一步都要穩，免得滴痕劃過紙邊那條已畫好的林蔭大道。暖燈下，調整後的色彩看來勉強合格；移到陰影處，橘色變淡，綠色則更貼近土色。雖然都和範例略有差距，卻仍能各就其位。木棒放回報紙後，淡淡的甜粉味在空氣中延續。
