Troy plucked a radish sprout from a sandwich, its sharp, mustard-like tang lifting over the milder smells of bread. He passed the sprig to the curious dog, distracting it long enough for Mabel to gather runaway grapes near the grass border. The grapes carried a wine-sweet note that mixed with cut cucumber, creating an unexpected abundance of flavours around their knees. A stack of berry tarts had been arranged near the shade, and jammy perfume drifted every time the blanket shifted. On her way back, she practised silent diplomacy with the slope, stepping carefully so no plate skidded toward the downhill corner. This time her thumb found the right groove, and a calm ribbon of lemonade poured into the waiting cup. A fresh burst of rind-bright fragrance mingled with the mild grass smell drifting from crushed blades. Below her elbow, a pale citrus arc now curved across the fabric near the downhill edge.
