The filled stainless-steel thermos, glossy and heavy, kept sliding downhill along the hidden ridge beneath the blanket's centre. He nudged it uphill with both palms, yet the next gust rolled it back, knocking a fork into Mae's elbow. Its weight offered stability, but its round side turned that same weight into a wandering wheel he could not restrain. After one firm shove, the cylinder rolled past his wrist, and he had to sidestep quickly to avoid a spill.

A fresh gust flipped the blanket’s loose edge, launching two napkins toward the downhill corner. Mae lunged, her forearm brushing the blanket, but she stumbled on the uneven grass border and the napkins escaped farther. The thermos rolled again, bumped the uphill basket, and its lid thumped shut on the serving spoon they still needed. Dorian grabbed the cylinder, its cool metal dragging against his fingertips with slow friction that confirmed its weight. If the thermos had been lighter, it would have followed the napkins off the cloth. Instead of pushing uphill, he pressed the heavy base onto the wind-side edge, using its mass to anchor the fabric. Mae lifted the basket lid and slid the trapped spoon through the thermos handle, forming a narrow bridge above the plates.

At once the cloth flattened, and the downhill corner stopped gathering runaway carrots; gravity now served their lunchtime rather than spoiling it. They rescued the napkins, sliding them under the spoon bridge, while small gusts only ruffled edges already secured by practical utility. Mae exhaled through a laugh and said, "Optimism survives out here when the flask behaves." Dorian nudged two sandwiches toward the centre flat, trusting the anchored cylinder to stay firm during each future sidestep across the cloth. He poured iced tea, watched the blanket remain still, and then laid the thermos beside the uphill stone before letting go.
