Otto paused, lifting his boot beside the mark; it stretched longer than his sole, like an elongated oval. Snow spiraled across his hood while Ursa packed wet flakes into a blue mould at the brick-moulding zone. Beyond the fort, streetlights glowed blue-white through a gauze of snow, and each breath drifted toward the quiet road. The half-circle wall already reached their waists, and the entrance gap framed the street beyond like a narrow window. Otto tipped the filled mould toward the wall top, but the slick plastic edge slid from his damp gloves. The snow block dropped with a muted thud, so he packed another, pressing hard until the surface felt like a cushion. He inverted this brick beside the doorway corner, loose crystals falling and brightening the shadowed floor within.

A row needed a jumpstart; both wall ends angled inward, threatening to squeeze the opening shut. If the bricks leaned any further, the doorway would disappear beneath a slanted dome. Otto steadied the right side with his elbow while Ursa ventured to the porch for the water bucket. A thin ice lid had been formed across the surface; it wobbled once and then stiffened under her mitten. Otto cracked it with the mould corner; shards flew, soaking the small cloth pouch sewn inside his sleeve. Cold wetness spread along his wrist like steel, so he sprinted toward the fence drift to collect snow. He brushed fresh flakes from the step while dashing back and spotted straight ridges inside the print. The mark had looked like a boot earlier; now it matched the mould’s rim exactly.
