A single pink carnation, caught earlier on Blythe’s glove, slipped free and lay on the packed floor. A thin layer of icy water had been poured between the lower rows earlier in the morning, and it already looked glassy. They needed three fresh bricks to hold the doorway straight; without them, the two loose ends kept sagging closer. She inverted the mould beside the entrance and nudged the block tight against the earlier pair. A faint line of water from the bucket trickled over the joint. The sudden pressure shook a loose brick on the wall top. It slid, tapped another, and both began to scuff toward the interior floor. The pair stopped when their lower edges bit into a mound of fresh powder, the slow crumble of snow absorbing their momentum. With the doorway now straight, the fort finally held its shape. Hours later, under a starlit sky, the yard lay silent. No footprints marked the smooth powder, and serenity hovered around the pale circle of blocks. A hopeful glimmer from the porch lamp flickered across the iced doorway.
