English 原文
Joel’s boot met the ice with an expected slide, yet the surface rasped like sandpaper beneath his heel. His knees bent to stay balanced while he carried a small cactus cupped in one gloved hand, planning to place it on the far stone border where sunlight gathered. Harris waited near the frozen-leaf spot, shifting weight from foot to foot; the narrow patch allowed only one clean run, so timing mattered. A flask of water swung from Joel’s belt, brought along to moisten the soil once the plant reached its new position. The reliability of the centre ice pleased him for the first two shuffles, but a gritty ridge just past the leaf forced a sideways hop that tightened his calves and slowed his advance.
A sudden bark cracked the cold air. A terrier burst from behind a bench, skidded onto the ice, and seized Harris’s woollen cap in its teeth. Both boys lunged toward the stone border; Joel’s boot punched through thinning edge ice, soaking his sock in biting water, yet he kept hold of the cactus. The dog retreated to the warm patch, tail wagging, so Joel followed, leaving the flask and plant on the gritty pavement while he coaxed the cap free. During those few minutes, sun warmed the centre, and a drip from the uncapped flask spread across the glaze. Vapour began to rise; the colder air above made the water evaporate only in faint wisps, but the liquid itself crept outward like a living ribbon.
Returning, Joel saw the change at once: the new film of meltwater gleamed and shortened the distance between ridges. Harris stepped first, gained too much speed, and veered toward the weak rim. Joel grabbed a handful of roadside sand and scattered it ahead of the slide; grains bit into the wet surface, trimming the glide before the boot met fragile ice. Together they steadied, then nudged the cactus to its sunny ledge. The flask that had been upright now lay on its side, and a thin stream kept sliding around the tilted pot toward the far rim.
