Stroke by stroke, Vernon arced a fish as long as his arm; the grooves stayed crisp, their edges quivering where water seeped up from below. Clara knelt opposite him, brushing loose grains aside so each sweeping tail-curve stayed clear. The cooler behind her acted like a supportive stool for spare shells, and its steel-grey lid reflected the sky. A charming flash of turquoise skated low over the tide line— a kingfisher zipped past, then vanished toward the rocks.

Vernon had already finished the fish’s outline when the first snag appeared: the runnel’s bank collapsed and cut a jagged notch through the lower fin. He trimmed the damage quickly, but a shout floated down-beach; Dad needed both children to help fold a wind-pushed umbrella before it toppled. They dropped the stick and hurried across the warming dry sand. By the time the canvas was strapped flat, three minutes had slipped away. If they had returned a minute later, the rising water would have taken the tail entirely. A sweeping tail had been traced across the sand, yet now the runnel meandered wider, an undulating ribbon that sliced their drawing in two. At its edge stood the kingfisher again, head tilted, as though measuring the distance between broken halves.

Clara scooped a thicker branch from the driftwood collection point and offered it without a word. Vernon accepted; together they redrew the missing fin higher up, turning the gap into waves. Each new curve mirrored the water’s undulating path, so the fish seemed to leap through the moving channel rather than against it. Spray reached their shins when a longer wave arrived, but the design held. Vernon raised the stick again, the next curved line already arcing through the air.
