Two weight clips gripped the rim of her plastic shell, yet the rising warmth loosened the tiny screw with each rotation. When the buzz dropped to a deeper pitch, the disc wobbled outward, clacking once against the raised edge before slowing. Cora scooped it up quickly, the pull-cord’s frayed strands brushing her wrist while Keane watched from the stool without speaking.

The parts bench waited under shadow, away from the strip of sun that warmed the bowl. Spare tips rattled as she searched beside a tiny plastic mole glued to the tray’s corner as decoration.
